Arrested Development

In 1991, when hip-hop had a fairly narrow idea of what it was supposed to look and sound like, Arrested Development showed up in African clothing with a clash of rhythms nobody had a category for. Three and a half decades later they are still cultural champions of consciousness and empowerment, and still refusing to sound like anyone else. They have backed groups and movements including the National Coalition for the Homeless and the African National Congress.

The hardware is remarkable. Their album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of... won two Grammys, for Best New Artist and Best Rap Single for "Tennessee," plus two MTV awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and an NAACP Image Award. Rolling Stone named them Band of the Year in 1992, VH-1 called them one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame put "Tennessee" on its list of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. They have shared stages with figures including Nelson Mandela, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Barack Obama.

They have not coasted. Their 2024 double album Bullets in the Chamber brought in Chuck D, Sky Zoo, Canibus, Diana King, Ras Kass, O'hene Savant, Twan Mack, MRK SX, Do it All Dupree, Grandmaster Caz, Sol Messiah, and Sa-Roc, with features from Montsho Eshe and Rasa Don. Now the focus is their newest project, Adult Contemporary Hip-Hop, executive produced by Speech for Vagabond Productions and Configa for Configaration Records, with singles "All I See Is Melanin" and "Pack It Out."
