A surgeon draws the line between the parts of breast cancer care that are essential for survival and the parts that make the experience bearable.
Dr. Lisa Wiechmann of the Comprehensive Breast Center at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, sets out the components of breast cancer care clearly, covering standard treatment options alongside newer approaches. She is joined by one of her own patients, who talks about what she took away from the process.
Wiechmann is a breast surgeon working within a multi-disciplinary team of radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons and breast cancer support staff. Her clinical interests include triple negative breast cancer, the genetic and familial predisposition to breast cancer, and disparities in cancer treatment and outcomes.
