A small Brazilian town in the 1920s, and a book club that reads whatever is good rather than whatever is new.
November's Classics Book Club takes on Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, Jorge Amado's 1958 novel. The group is led by Catherine Riordan, who taught literature at college level for many years and has an infectious enthusiasm for the classics, and it ranges across every period, modern work included. Copies of the current book are kept at the library's front desk.
What is coming after this. The club takes December off, then returns on 22 January with John Barth's The Sot-Weed Factor, 26 February with The Maltese Falcon, 26 March with An American Tragedy, 23 April with James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son, 28 May with In Cold Blood and 25 June with East of Eden.
Good to know. Free, and registration is required.
