G. Love & Special Sauce: Yeah, It's That Easy

Slacker blues, invented in Philadelphia in 1993 and still working.

G. Love & Special Sauce formed in Philadelphia with Garrett Dutton, who is G. Love, on vocals and guitar, Jeffrey Clemens on drums and Jim Prescott on bass, and the thing that got everyone's attention immediately was the fusion: hip hop, blues, funk and soul in one laid back groove, with Dutton's delivery sliding between rap like spoken word and bluesy singing.

The self titled 1994 debut on Epic carried Cold Beverage, which took over alternative radio and MTV. What followed was a long catalogue, Coast to Coast Motel in 1995, Yeah, It's That Easy in 1997, The Electric Mile in 2001 and the Grammy nominated The Juice in 2020, picking up soul, R&B and rock along the way without ever losing the original feel. The 2014 album Sugar reunited the founding lineup.

They are a live band above all, with Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza behind them, and Dutton collaborates widely, Jack Johnson among them.

Where to go. The Playhouse is at 80 East Ridge Road in Ridgefield, behind the town hall, and it is an easy run in from anywhere in lower Fairfield County.
