The White House. The view from Arlington Cemetery to the Lincoln Memorial. Threaten an old place and people who never cared about architecture turn up to the hearing.
Tom Mayes, author of Why Old Places Matter and former Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has spent a career on that question. He helped establish the Glass House as a National Trust Historic Site and has worked through the legal battles over the civic architecture of Washington DC. He taught historic preservation law at the University of Maryland for many years and holds a National Endowment for the Arts Rome Prize in Historic Preservation. His argument is the one in the title: places have the power to change people.
