People reached islands scattered across a third of the planet's surface long before anyone else was sailing out of sight of land. How is still argued over.
The Mark Twain Library's History Book Club takes on Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia by Christina Thompson, which works through what is actually known about Polynesian navigation and settlement and how much of it remains contested. The group is led by members of the library's Programming Committee, who pick engaging history reads and meet regularly for discussions that reliably run long. Copies of the current book are available to borrow at the library.
It is free, but book. Registration is required.
Where to go. The Mark Twain Library is at 439 Redding Road.
