Lunch & Learn with the New Canaan Mounted Troop
Historical

It started in 1939 as a junior cavalry chapter. It is now a therapeutic equestrian center, and it is still here.
Josie Hauer, President and CEO, and Caroleigh Evarts, Therapeutic Program Director, come to the Museum's Lunch & Learn to trace the past, present and future of the New Canaan Mounted Troop, the nonprofit youth development and therapeutic equestrian center on the town's doorstep. It began as a Junior Mounted Cavalry chapter for local young people, founded by Margaret Cabell Self, and it has been reinventing itself ever since.
In 2012 the Troop widened its mission to take in Equine-Assisted Services and Therapies, opening real opportunities to children and adults with physical, emotional, intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today it runs Equine-Assisted Learning and Corporate Engagement programs too, using purposeful, ground-based work with horses to help people strengthen communication, build leadership, foster teamwork and develop self-awareness.
Across more than eighty-five years the thread has held: confidence, resilience and connection, and a community where every participant is meant to feel valued and supported.
