One book, one town, and about twenty events built out of it.

The Brookfield Library's One Town, One Read runs on Alison Espach's The Wedding People this year, and the programming follows the novel out into weddings, Newport and the New England shoreline. It is the closest thing the library calendar has to a festival, and almost all of it is aimed at adults.

Talks and history. The Bowtie Historian on the Vanderbilt mansions of the Gilded Age, and wedding dresses through the years with vintage film.

Books. The main event is Brookfield Reads, where the town discusses the novel itself. Every other book group joins in too — a Gilded Age murder in Newport, a real empty mansion, a wartime wedding dress, Lovecraft for Halloween and The Tempest read aloud.

At the movies. Three Sunday screenings: Father of the Bride, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Mamma Mia!

Making things. Book folding, sea shell trinket dishes and soaps, potpourri sachets, solid perfume, needle felting, quilling, bookbinding, flower arranging, embroidered handkerchiefs, modern calligraphy and a watercolour lighthouse — plus cakemaking with a local baker and a mocktail hour run by a professional bartender.
