The Adventures of Harold and The Purple Crayon

Harold draws a path. Then he draws the moon. Then things get out of hand.

Enchantment Theatre Company's production takes Harold to Mars, complete with shooting stars and spaceships, into a circus where he walks a tightrope, and into an enchanted garden to meet a king, where there is of course a dragon. Crockett Johnson's Harold books have held families for more than fifty years by taking children's imaginations seriously, and Enchantment, one of America's most inventive producers of original theater for young audiences, has adapted them using its signature mix of life size puppets, masks, magic and music.

It works on children starting at Harold's own age and on grandparents, which is a harder trick than it sounds.

Good to know. Recommended for ages 5 and up, and it runs about 60 minutes. This is the 11am; there is a 2pm performance the same day.

Make a day of it. Show your ticket at Dimitri's Diner, 16 Prospect Street in Ridgefield, before or after the show and they take 10 percent off your meal.

Where to go. The Playhouse is at 80 East Ridge Road in Ridgefield, behind the town hall, and it is an easy run in from anywhere in lower Fairfield County.
