Thirteen colonies send delegates to one room in Philadelphia, and not one of them yet agrees on what they are doing there.

New Canaan Library is screening all six episodes of The American Revolution — the documentary from Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt that treats the founding as three things at once: a war for independence, a civil war, and a world war that swept up millions. Episode Two covers May 1775 to July 1776. The Second Continental Congress convenes at the Pennsylvania State House with its members split between reconciliation and permanent separation. In the north, Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen take Fort Ticonderoga from a British garrison that surrenders without a shot. Congress forms the Continental Army and hands George Washington command. And outside Boston, the British take the high ground at Breed’s Hill and Bunker Hill at a price that stains the victory — nearly forty percent of their troops killed or wounded.
