The Iran Nuclear Threat: History and Current Challenges

Rick Lawrence, PhD in Nuclear Engineering, takes the Iran nuclear question apart for a general audience — starting, usefully, with a plain tutorial on the terms the news uses without explaining: fission, enrichment, centrifuges, weapon design.

From there: the 2015 nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), President Trump's 2018 withdrawal from it, and what Iran has done since. The talk shows the actual data on Iran's enriched uranium inventory over that period, so you can see what the agreement did and what its collapse did. It closes on the challenges facing the current negotiations, and a simple opening proposal that would cost both sides something real.

Good to know. Free, in the Main Program Room. Registration is required and closes at the 7pm start.
