The Met Live in HD: Silent Night (Puts), Encore

Christmas 1914. Soldiers climbed out of the trenches to exchange gifts with the people they had been shooting at.

Silent Night draws on the true events of that truce, and it is one of the most powerful new works of this century. Composer Kevin Puts, who also wrote The Hours, returns to the Met with his Pulitzer Prize winning first opera, which The Guardian called an overwhelming emotive experience.

James Robinson, who directed Champion and Porgy and Bess, stages it in a way that puts the audience directly onto the battlefields of the Western Front. The cast is Elza van den Heever, Ben Bliss, Rolando Villazón, Ben Reisinger, Mattia Olivieri, Justin Austin, Ryan McKinny and Kyle Ketelsen, with Dalia Stasevska conducting.

Good to know. This is the encore screening. Runtime is about three hours with one intermission.

About the series. The Met: Live in HD sends performances straight from the Metropolitan Opera stage into cinemas worldwide, and the Playhouse is the local screen for it. The series here is supported by Liz and Steven Goldstone and Whistle Stop Bakery.

Where to go. The Playhouse is at 80 East Ridge Road in Ridgefield, behind the town hall, and it is an easy run in from anywhere in lower Fairfield County.
