It used to define the forests of eastern North America. Its future is still being written.
Michael Goergen, president and chief executive of The American Chestnut Foundation, traces the tree's rise and its collapse, sets out what decades of restoration work have taught, and explains where the foundation is heading next. That includes recurrent genomic selection, an approach that lets breeders make progress on several traits at once: disease resistance, growth, adaptation, and the ability to hold up in a forest that is changing around it. A history that reaches across continents, told by someone trying to change its ending.
