Two players who know the tradition well enough to take it apart.
Rakish, an award-winning fiddle, banjo and guitar duo, play Celtic music built out of the deep well of tradition and then pushed somewhere else. The hour moves through Scottish and Irish Celtic composition alongside classical chamber music and improvisational playing.
Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and is a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland. Her clawhammer banjo playing and songwriting, both part of the duo's sound, keep the regional music of home close. Conor Hearn was raised in the Irish music communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore; his settings of modernist poems, including James Joyce's Chamber Music, are the clearest example of what the duo does with old and new material. A sought-after collaborative guitarist who performs with many of the best-known names in Celtic music, he combines bass and rhythm into a notably powerful, precise style.
