Historically Speaking Book Club: Master Slave Husband Wife
Talk Series

In 1848, a young enslaved couple escaped more than a thousand miles in plain sight.
The Historically Speaking Book Club reads Ilyon Woo's Master Slave Husband Wife. Ellen and William Craft posed as master and slave, sustained by their marriage as husband and wife, and travelled over a thousand miles out in the open, on steamboats, carriages and trains that carried them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North. It is one of the boldest acts of self-emancipation in American history, and it happened in a year of democratic revolt across the world.
