Historically Speaking Book Club: Mona's Eyes
Talk Series

A grandfather cannot stop his granddaughter going blind. He can decide what she sees first.
The Historically Speaking Book Club reads Mona's Eyes by Thomas Schlesser. Ten-year-old Mona has had one brief episode of blindness that the doctors cannot explain, and they will not rule out losing her sight permanently. Her grandfather Henry's answer is to fill the time with beauty: every Wednesday for a year the two of them slip away to see a single masterpiece in one of Paris's great museums, fifty-two Wednesdays and fifty-two works, from Botticelli to Basquiat. Mona learns how each artist shaped the world around them, and rather more than that about generosity, melancholy, love, loss and revolution.
