Senior Center Book Discussion: A Gentleman in Moscow

A count sentenced to live in a hotel, across the street from the Kremlin.

Caryn Friedman leads a discussion of Amor Towles's best selling second novel, which followed Rules of Civility and was named a New York Times Readers' Choice best book of the 21st century. Rostov's banishment to internal exile in a Moscow hotel gives Towles his backdrop for commentary on Russian history through its revolutionary period, but it also lets the reader follow his self-discovery as the peripheral figures in his shrunken orbit turn into the central people in his life. Kirkus called it a great novel and a nonstop pleasure brimming with charm, personal wisdom and philosophic insight, and said it more than fulfilled the promise of Towles's stylish debut.
