Arts & Culture
Weir Farm National Historic Site is one of only two national historic sites in the country dedicated to the visual arts, the rural home and studio of American Impressionist J. Alden Weir, whose "Great Good Place" once welcomed fellow painters like Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent. The Wilton Historical Society and Museum preserves more than 300 years of local history across a campus of five 18th and 19th century buildings, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History & Architecture
The Cannondale Historic District preserves a 19th century mill village along the Norwalk River, and the town's oldest church, built in 1790 on Ridgefield Road, still stands as the oldest church building in Fairfield County.
Wilton's story begins in 1701, when the area was first settled as the northern district of neighboring Norwalk. Early families built farms along the fertile Norwalk River valley and on the ridges of Belden Hill and Chestnut Hill, and by 1726 the community had grown enough to build its first meetinghouse, giving Wilton its first true town center.
The Revolutionary War reached Wilton briefly in 1777, when British troops retreating from their raid on Danbury passed through the village and set several houses on fire, though the speed of their retreat spared the town from greater destruction. More than 300 men from Wilton served in the war, a remarkable number for so small a community.
In 1802, despite objections from Norwalk, Wilton's residents petitioned for and were granted separate town government status by the Connecticut General Assembly. For most of the 19th century, Wilton remained a quiet farming community, its population growing slowly as families raised dairy herds and worked the land.
