When the temperature climbs, you don't have to fight traffic or drive all the way to the Cape to cool off. Between our lakes, our stretch of Long Island Sound, a couple of water parks worth the drive, and no shortage of ways to actually get out on the water, there's a spot for every kind of summer day. Here's where locals go.

Close to Home: Lakes & Local Swimming Holes

Martin Park Beach

Start right in Ridgefield at Martin Park Beach, a favorite for families who want a swim day without the drive. A short trip over to New Fairfield brings you to Squantz Pond State Park, one of the most scenic freshwater swimming spots in the area, tucked at the north end of Candlewood Lake with mountain views on all sides. Candlewood Town Park in Danbury offers a sandy beach, a playground, and plenty of room to spread out on Connecticut's largest lake.

Long Island Sound: Beach Days

For a true beach day, head to Westport's Sherwood Island State Park or Compo Beach, both offering that classic Sound shoreline with room for the whole family. In Rye, NY, Playland Beach pairs a Long Island Sound beach with the added bonus of the historic Rye Playland boardwalk right next door, so swimming and a few rides can easily turn into one full day out.

On the Water: Boating, Jet Skis & Water Sports

If you want to get out on the water rather than just next to it, Candlewood Lake is the region's hub for it. Marinas like Gerard's Waters Edge Marina in New Milford and Lakeside Watersports in Brookfield rent pontoons, wakeboard boats, and jet skis, and offer tubing, water skiing, and wakeboarding, some fully captained so no boating license is needed. If Candlewood's weekend crowds and boat traffic aren't your speed, Lake Lillinonah, just 10 minutes from Candlewood in New Milford, offers calmer water and certified watersports instruction. Closer to home, Ridgefield's own Great Pond has a boathouse at Martin Park Beach renting kayaks and paddle boats for a quieter afternoon.

Down on the Sound, Norwalk, Westport, and Rowayton are the area's boating hubs, with charter companies offering everything from captained sunset cruises to jet ski and powerboat rentals, plus sailing schools for anyone wanting to learn.

In Westchester County, NY, Rye Playland's Manursing Lake rents kayaks, tandem kayaks, and paddleboards right within the park, and guided kayak tours launch from Rye Beach along the Sound. Further north, Tarrytown Lakes Park is a relaxed spot for beginners and kids to try kayaking, and tours out of Sleepy Hollow paddle the Hudson River past the Tarrytown Lighthouse.

Water Parks Worth the Drive

For the full water park experience, Quassy Amusement Park's Splash Away Bay in Middlebury is one of the closer options, pairing a water park with lakeside amusement rides on Lake Quassapaug. SplashDown Beach in Fishkill, NY is another solid pick within about 45 minutes. For a bigger outing near the edge of a reasonable drive, Lake Compounce in Bristol has more than earned its reputation, with its water park, Crocodile Cove, worth the extra time in the car.

However you like to cool off, whether it's a quiet paddle on Great Pond or a full day of jet skis and waterslides, summer around here is never far from the water.
