Tales of a Forgotten Day: Myth and Memory at Lover's Leap

A legend invented about a place, and what it did to the people already there.

Paul Wegner, Assistant Director and Exhibit Curator at the Institute for American Indian Studies, traces how the Legend of Weantinaug grew up around the falls at Lover's Leap State Park in New Milford, and how that story shaped perceptions of Native people and their place in the landscape. He covers the latest archaeological and historical research at the site, along with the projects now underway to uncover the accurate indigenous history of the area known to Algonkian peoples.
