It is 1954, and two widowed sisters are sharing the summer cottage on a Maine island they have shared for decades.
Libby, the elder, has grown reclusive and irritable, waiting for the escort who will carry her off to join her late husband. Sarah, who cares for her, still waits each August for the whales to come back. A charming stranger arrives and upends the peace, forcing both of them to look again at the lives they have settled into. David Berry's play is wistful and autumnal, and it ends as quietly as it begins, on the recognition that life has to continue as best it can. It was produced Off-Broadway in 1980 and filmed in 1984.
Directed by Lou Okell, produced by Andrew Okell and Jessica Chesbro.
