Welcome to
Fairfield CT

Five miles of shoreline, five town beaches, three train stations, two universities, one town that somehow has it all without feeling like it's trying too hard. Fairfield earns its reputation quietly, through the family walking to the beach on a Tuesday evening and the packed restaurant on a Wednesday night.

A historic coastal town with two universities (Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University), beautiful beaches, and a strong community feel.

Beaches & Coastline

Fairfield's five miles of Long Island Sound shoreline are anchored by five town beaches, including Jennings Beach, donated to the town by philanthropist Annie Burr Jennings, and Penfield Beach, both popular gathering spots for residents all summer long.

Arts & Education

Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University bring more than 17,000 students and a steady stream of arts and culture to town year-round, including exhibitions and performances at Fairfield University's Regina Quick Center. The Fairfield Museum and History Center offers rotating exhibits on the town's colonial and Revolutionary War history, and the historic village of Southport, tucked around its own working harbor, adds a quieter, scenic corner to explore.

Golf & Recreation

Golfers have two well-regarded public options in H. Smith Richardson Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course, and the Carl Dickman Par 3, set just steps from Long Island Sound. The Connecticut Audubon Society's Fairfield center offers seven miles of trails, including a wheelchair-accessible option, for birders and hikers alike.

Fairfield's story begins in 1639, when Roger Ludlow led English settlers into the area following the Pequot War, making it one of the earliest towns established in the Connecticut Colony, alongside neighboring Stratford. For more than a century, the community grew outward from its original "Four Squares" of land near today's Old Post and Beach Roads, developing into a prosperous farming and coastal town.

The Revolutionary War brought devastation to Fairfield. In July 1779, a British and Hessian force came ashore near Black Rock Harbor and burned more than two hundred structures to the ground. Residents spent the next two decades rebuilding, and some families left permanently for Connecticut's Western Reserve, while part of Fairfield's original land was later annexed to form the town of Westport.

Fairfield rebuilt and reinvented itself in the centuries that followed, evolving from its colonial and agricultural roots into the university town and coastal suburb it is today. Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution, was founded in 1942 and welcomed its first undergraduate class in 1947, joining Sacred Heart University to make Fairfield a genuine center of higher education in Fairfield County.
