More about
Bethel CT

Arts & Entertainment

The Bethel Historical Society & Museum, housed in the town's original 1849 Town Hall, preserves the stories of this community, while Berkshire Hall and the Heirloom Arts Theatre host concerts and live performances throughout the year. For a movie night with character, Bethel's independent cinema shows everything from arthouse and foreign films to mainstream releases in a uniquely intimate setting.

Downtown & Dining

At the heart of town is P.T. Barnum Square, named for Bethel's most famous son, the showman and circus creator born here in 1810. The historic downtown blends well-preserved 19th century architecture, local shops, murals, and restaurants perfect for a leisurely stroll, with live jazz some nights at La Zingara on the Square. The dining scene ranges from Thai, Italian, Mexican, and contemporary American fare to local favorites like the Sycamore Drive-In, known for its burgers and shakes, and Craft 260, with its creative menu and local craft beers.

Outdoors & Recreation

Meckauer Park offers walking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts, and soccer fields for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Each fall, Blue Jay Orchards draws the whole community with pick-your-own apples across 140 acres and 36 varieties, a beloved farm stand, apple cider donuts, and a pumpkin patch.

Community & Events

The Bethel Public Library offers book clubs, story times, and workshops for all ages, and the Bethel Community Center provides even more ways to get involved. Each year, Bethel Summer Fest brings the whole town together for a celebration of local spirit.

Our History

Bethel's story begins around 1700, when the area was first settled as part of neighboring Danbury. The community took its name in 1759, Bethel, from the Hebrew term meaning "House of God," though it would remain part of Danbury for nearly another century.

Bethel's most famous son was born during those early years as a Danbury parish: Phineas Taylor Barnum, the legendary showman and circus creator, arrived in 1810, and the town's historic square still bears his name today.
