Welcome to
Sherman CT

There is a point on the drive into Sherman where Fairfield County starts to feel far away, the roads narrow, the trees close in, and the noise drops away. Sherman is the northernmost and smallest town in Fairfield County, where Candlewood Lake meets dense forest and the community is small enough to truly know itself.

The northernmost town in Fairfield County, a quiet and small rural area bordering New York.

More about
Sherman CT

Life on Candlewood Lake

Sherman sits at the northern end of Candlewood Lake, Connecticut's largest lake by surface area, with more than 65 miles of shoreline offering boating, fishing, and kayaking through every season. The Appalachian Trail also runs through Sherman's hills, giving hikers a genuine piece of one of the country's most iconic long-distance trails right in town.

History & Culture

The Sherman Historic District, an 85-acre National Register of Historic Places listing, centers on the town's 19th century village core, including the 1837 Center Church, now a performance space, and the 1886 Old Town Hall. The Sherman Historical Society's Northrup House Museum preserves a permanent exhibit on Roger Sherman, the town's namesake, and offers access to the scenic Mallory Trail. The Sherman Playhouse, home to the Sherman Players, stages musicals and plays year round inside a converted historic church.

Local Favorites

White Silo Farm & Winery produces and bottles wine from farm-grown fruit right in town, and the Sherman Library, housed in a 1926 Colonial Revival building, anchors community life alongside local favorites like the American Pie Company and Sacred Grounds Coffee Roasters.

Sherman's story is genuinely tied to one of the country's Founding Fathers. In 1743, a 22-year-old Roger Sherman moved with his family from Massachusetts to a settlement then known as New Dilloway, in what is now northern Sherman, working alongside his father as a shoemaker and surveyor before moving on to nearby New Milford a few years later to study law. Sherman would go on to become the only person in American history to sign all four of the nation's founding documents: the Continental Association of 1774, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution.

The area itself was originally part of New Fairfield. As the northern seven miles of that town grew more populated, residents established their own congregation and meetinghouse around 1744. Sixty years later, in October 1802, they successfully petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly for independence, and the new town took the name Sherman in honor of its brief but formative connection to the statesman.

Farming, particularly dairy and tobacco, along with mills for timber, cider, and grain, sustained Sherman's economy through the 19th century. In the early 1900s, the construction of Candlewood Lake permanently changed the town's southern landscape, flooding former farmland and creating the recreational identity Sherman is known for today.
