Welcome to
Westport CT

There are towns in Fairfield County that are well known, and then there is Westport, a place where artists and writers have gathered for generations, Paul Newman lived here, Martha Stewart built her empire here, and behind all that reputation is a genuine town with real roots and a quality of everyday life that has nothing to do with who you might run into at the farmers market.

A picturesque town with a thriving arts scene, stunning coastline, and high-end shopping and dining.

More about
Westport CT

Arts & Culture

Westport Country Playhouse, founded in 1931 by Broadway producer Lawrence Langner inside a remodeled 1830s tannery, remains one of the most celebrated regional theaters in the country, having sent productions like Come Back, Little Sheba and Our Town on to Broadway. Joanne Woodward served as artistic director in the 2000s, and her husband, Paul Newman, remained part-owner of the restaurant next door until his death in 2008.

Beaches & Outdoors

Compo Beach, a 29-acre park, anchors summer life with sailing lessons, a playground, and water sports, while Burying Hill Beach and nearby Sherwood Island State Park round out Westport's stretch of Long Island Sound coastline, the most waterfront of any town in Connecticut.

Downtown & Library

Downtown Westport blends independently owned shops, galleries, and restaurants along Main Street, and The Westport Library, founded in 1886 and fully reimagined in a 2019 renovation, has become one of the most active and innovative public libraries in the country.

Westport's earliest settlers were farming families who called the area Green's Farm, part of the surrounding towns of Fairfield, Norwalk, and Weston. The town was formally incorporated on May 28, 1835, taking land from all three neighbors and adopting the name Westport. By the 19th century, the town had become a bustling shipping center and the leading onion-growing region in the entire country.

Around 1910, artists discovered Westport, and the town transformed into a nationally known center of creative life. The Famous Artists School and Famous Writers School both established roots here, drawing illustrators, writers, and creative talent from across America, and the population doubled within thirty years.

That creative legacy deepened through the 20th century. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in Westport while working on The Great Gatsby, and decades later, Martha Stewart bought a run-down 1805 farmhouse on Turkey Hill Road in 1971, the property where she built her catering business and, eventually, her entire lifestyle empire over the following 36 years. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward made Westport their home for decades, deeply intertwined with the Westport Country Playhouse's story.
