The Elephant's Trunk Flea Market
Since 1976, the Elephant's Trunk Flea Market has grown from a handful of vendors selling out of the backs of trucks into New England's largest weekly flea market, with hundreds of vendors setting up every Sunday from April through December. Now marking its 50th anniversary season, it draws treasure hunters, antique collectors, and Sunday regulars from across the region.
History & Nature
Lovers Leap State Park offers 160 acres of trails along the Housatonic River, anchored by a dramatic 1895 iron lenticular truss bridge and the Native American legend that gives the park its name. Nearby, Harrybrooke Park preserves the former estate of New York industrialist Frank Harden, complete with manicured gardens, a river walk, and a house museum, once a favorite weekend retreat of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, who lived in neighboring Roxbury.
Downtown & Culture
Bank Street anchors a thriving downtown of independent shops and restaurants framed by the western Connecticut hills, and the New Milford Historical Society and Museum preserves the town's story across several historic buildings on the Town Green, including the 1815 Knapp House. The New Milford Barn Quilt Trail, the first of its kind in Connecticut, leads visitors past 19 hand-painted quilt patterns on historic barns around town.
New Milford's story begins in 1707, when English settlers John Noble Sr. and his eight-year-old daughter, Sarah, arrived from Massachusetts to establish the town along the Housatonic River. New Milford was formally incorporated in 1712, and would go on to become Connecticut's largest town by land area.
The town's most notable resident was Roger Sherman, the only person in American history to sign all four of the nation's founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Association, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. During the Revolutionary War, New Milford raised its own regiment, the 7th Connecticut, sending 285 men to fight in battles including Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth, out of a total town population of just 2,776.
Through the 19th century, New Milford grew into a manufacturing town, producing everything from buttons to paint and varnish, while tobacco farming and warehousing anchored its agricultural economy. The Great Fire of 1902 remains one of the defining events in the town's history, still documented today at the New Milford Historical Society and Museum.
