A Town Rooted in History
Newtown's well-preserved historic district makes a walk down Main Street feel like stepping through the pages of a history book. Architecture here stretches back to the 18th century, from the Caleb Baldwin Tavern (1763) and the Matthew Curtiss House (1750) to the Colonial Revival Edmond Town Hall (1930) and the Newtown Meeting House, first built in 1720 and enlarged in 1792.

Paugussett State Forest spans nearly 2,000 acres of pristine woodlands, tranquil ponds, and babbling streams, with extensive hiking trails and fishing on Lake Zoar, Lake Lillinonah, and Lake Housatonic. The Blue-Blazed Zoar Trail winds through forest ridges and past the cascading Prydden Falls before opening onto stunning lake views. Fairfield Hills Campus adds over 180 acres of green space with walking and biking trails, repurposed historic buildings, and a hub for community events.

From the beloved Labor Day Parade that winds through the streets each year to seasonal farmers markets and community gatherings at Edmond Town Hall, there's always something bringing people together. Historic Main Street is lined with shops, cafés, and beautifully preserved buildings, keeping that vibrant community spirit alive year-round.
Newtown's story begins in 1705, when English colonists purchased the land from the Pohtatuck people, a branch of the Paugussett, in an area then known as Quanneapague. Settlers from Stratford established the town, which was formally incorporated in 1711.
During the early Revolutionary War, Newtown was known as a stronghold of Tory sentiment, remaining loyal to the British crown even as much of Connecticut turned toward independence. Later in the war, in 1781, French General Rochambeau and his soldiers camped in Newtown on their march toward the Siege of Yorktown, the campaign that would help end the Revolution.
The town's grand Main Street reflects more than a century of civic pride, anchored by three buildings now on the National Register of Historic Places: the Newtown Meeting House, first built in 1720 and later relocated and enlarged in 1792; the Cyrenius H. Booth Library, a 1932 gift from town benefactress Mary Elizabeth Hawley; and Edmond Town Hall, built in 1930 and named for her great-grandfather, Judge William Edmond, the only Newtown resident ever to serve in the U.S. Congress.
