Parks & Outdoors
Wolfe Park, an award-winning town park, sits alongside Great Hollow Lake for fishing, picnicking, and quiet lakeside time. Webb Mountain Park and the adjoining Webb Mountain Discovery Zone together offer more than 300 acres and 13.5 miles of trails, with an outdoor classroom and interpretive nature signage for schools and families alike. Rails to Trails bike paths connect the town for cyclists, and Monroe also borders Lake Zoar, part of the Housatonic River.
Library & Community
The Edith Wheeler Memorial Library anchors community life, its Wheeler Fund even sponsors "Little Library" book exchange boxes at Wolfe Park and Great Hollow Lake for residents to borrow and share books outdoors. The Monroe Historical Society preserves the town's story for future generations.
Villages
Monroe is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, including Monroe Center, Stepney, and Stevenson, each contributing its own character to the town as a whole.
Monroe's roots reach back to 1671, when the land, originally part of Stratford, was included in what became known as the White Hills Purchase, transferring the territory from the Paugussett people to the town of Stratford. For more than a century, the area remained a farming community within Stratford's borders.
In 1823, the Connecticut General Assembly granted Monroe its independence as its own incorporated town, naming it in honor of then-sitting President James Monroe. Agriculture remained the backbone of the local economy well into the 19th century, when Monroe also grew into something of a transportation crossroads, a stopover point for travelers heading to Danbury, Bridgeport, and New York.
Today, Monroe has grown into a family-oriented bedroom community serving Bridgeport, Stamford, New Haven, and New York City, while still holding onto the small-town character its residents value most.
